Planet vs. Plastics: Earth Day 2024 Echoes Public Concerns

The theme of this year’s Earth Day, “Planet vs. Plastics”, draws attention to the prevalent issue of plastic pollution and its impact on the environment. Through our Great Green Sustainability Study, we unveil a narrative of public sentiment, global concerns, and evolving consumer behaviour, urging for concerted action to combat plastic waste.

In the UK, a resounding 70% of the public echoes a unified call for the banning of plastic in packaging. This level of public opinion reflects a growing awareness of the dire consequences of plastic pollution on our planet’s health and biodiversity.

On a global scale, our research reveals a prioritisation of plastic waste reduction among environmental concerns. With 37% of respondents ranking the elimination of plastic waste within their top six priorities, it emerges as the second most pressing environmental issue overall. This statistic underscores a shared recognition of the urgent need to address the widespread threat of plastic pollution.

Moreover, a significant shift in consumer behaviour is evident, with 41% of individuals claiming to actively avoid single-use plastic products. This trend towards conscious consumption signifies a growing desire to align personal choices with environmental values, fostering a culture of sustainability.

These insights not only inform individual choices but also carry significant implications for businesses and policymakers. Companies embracing eco-friendly packaging solutions and demonstrating environmental stewardship stand poised to meet the demands of an increasingly conscientious consumer base, while policymakers are urged to enact regulations that align with public sentiment and foster a transition towards sustainable alternatives.

As Earth Day 2024 takes place, the theme “Planet vs. Plastics” emphasises the need to reduce plastic production, a sentiment shared by many members of the UK public. However, the power to reduce plastic pollution and ensure a sustainable future for our planet lies in collective action and commitment.
